America’s Finest City Homebrew Competition – Since 1992

The Largest Homebrew Competition in Southern California

QUAFF was founded in 1989 and currently has almost 300 active members, making it one of the largest Homebrew Clubs in the US. We began running AFC in 1992 and it has historically been the largest homebrew competition in Southern California [encompassing Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, and San Diego Counties.]

AFC is part of both the Master Homebrewer Program [MHP] Circuit of America and the California Homebrewers Association [CHA] Club of the Year circuit.

High Quality Judging: AFC is known for attracting some of the best beer judges around!  In 2023, we had 49 judges – of which 48 were BJCP ranked, including 6 Grand Master+, 2 Master, 9 National, 29 Certified, 1 Mead Only, 1 Recognized.  Only one of our judges in 2023 was non-BJCP.  With 40 tables, every entry was judged by a pair that included a judge with rank of Certified or better.

Low Cost & Low Bottle Requirement: We have focused on keeping costs down at $10 per entry (QUAFF pays the PayPal fee!), and we organize the competition to maximize judging efficiency so that we only require 2 bottles per entry.

No Per-Brewer Entry Cap: There is no per entry cap per Each brewer may submit as many entries as you would like – but only one entry per subcategory.

High Quality Awards: For our 35th Anniversary, we have re-designed our medals, which are awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at each table (minimum score of 25 is required to medal).  We also offer BOS plaques for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd BOS in Beer and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Mead/Cider combined.  Finally, we offer an award for the homebrewer who wins the most medals overall called the “Brew Machine”
